Photo Essay on Puja Pandals of 2014, Bangalore

When it is Durga Puja time of the year, Bengalis are in a frenzy celebrating the 4 days. Besides worship and prayers, eating and pandal hopping becomes major activities. (Pandals are places where the resident Bengalis of that area get together, contribute and worship Goddess Durga.)

This year I could make it to 11 pujas in the city scattered in various parts of the city. Here are 4 of them. Along with the decoration of pandal how the goddess is decorated becomes a hot topic of discussion.

The one below is from Koramangala Bengali association. This year they had a monochrome kind of decoration for the idols. Soft glittering peach shade.

The one below is from Kagdaspura. Very simply decorated the idols didn’t even have the crowns.

.

This one below is from Brookefields. Nice glittering decorations, the ornaments too shining; overall a yellow gold effect.

.

The final one of this post is from Assamese association of Bangalore. The whole place was very crowded and I had to take the pic from an angle. The decorations were of thermocol and overall there was a soothing snowy effect.

.

Hope you all liked this set.

Wow.. so much work goes into these. I tend to like colourful over plain but in this case, I think I like the monochrome best.

  3. Extremely beautiful images and the settings.Making the admirable puja images is an art that only a few can do.The design and decoration of the pandal and the backdrop is another creative art.

I cannot know the effect on a Hindu, but for me an other-worldliness is evoked.
