Dendrobium Phalaenopsis in My Balcony Garden

Update from my balcony garden: Pink Orchid: Dendrobium Phalaenopsis variety of orchid has bloomed. The stick is two weeks old, three have bloomed, three still in their ‘bud’ stage. I decided not to cut the stick. I want to see how long the plant holds the flowers fresh. Once cut they last for just a month in a vase before it wilts away.

Update: 16th June 2013

My lone orchid plant surprised me with two blooming sticks when I returned home after vacation. It was a pleasant sign, the orchid sticks swaying a warm welcome to me. It is the Dendrobium Phalaenopsis variety. I have cut the orchid sticks for home decor. At the florist each orchid stick costs about Rs. 25.

The plant is now two years old, has a good growth and seems to be overflowing from the pot. I am often tempted to re-pot and make two plants out of it, but lack the expertise to do it. And moreover I have read orchids resent re-potting. I am planning to wait for another year and re-pot it only if the growth unbalances the pot.

It is three weeks now, and the flowers in my vase look fresh as if cut from plant just now.

Orchids In My Garden

A year and half back I had procured three new orchid plants. My lone orchid plant looked as if it could do well with some company. So a year and half back I had procured 3 new orchid plants.

Initially the plants shed off its leaves and looking at their pitiable state I gave up all hopes the plants would survive. The stems continued to be green though. I continued to water them regularly.

A couple of months back a tiny shoot appeared. My joy knew no bounds. The stick had only four buds, but at least it survived and flowered and that was more than what I had expected. Here is a picture of the orchid. I now have 4 types of orchids in my garden. Other orchids too are showing signs of blooming.

Sometime back I had mentioned that I was waiting for my third orchid to bloom. Finally, after a long wait the orchid plant has bloomed. The stick had only 5 buds, two of them have bloomed. I am impatient to wait for all these to bloom, so here is the stick with two blooms. Do I use the orchid stick for home decor? Just like what I do with the jasmine flowers from my balcony garden.

It has such a pale pink color that I wasn’t sure if I should be disappointed. I was expecting some bright hues. But now as I watch it more closely I have started loving the color. Soft pink, the lightest shade possible, it looks so delicate like the skin of a fair lady. When the seller was rattling out the names of the orchids, my mind was so preoccupied with thoughts of which had more chances of survival that I did not register the names. I now have absolutely no clue as to which family of orchid this belongs to. Please leave the name as comment if any of you know it.

I am now feeling more encouraged to purchase a couple of varieties more. This time I will pay attention to names.
