Salzburg Puppet Marionette Museum

The museum has delightful exhibit of enchanting Marionettes in the Prince’s Cellar in the basement of Hohensalzburg Fortress. As we entered the museum we were welcomed by an animated picture of Bishop Wolf Dietrich.

It is a bit scary, particularly the sharp look of his eyes. This Bishop was held captive in the dungeons of this fortress from 1611 till his death in 1617.

His image almost roars: My spirit lives in these rooms. And that slows down your pace down a bit, but the sights of the various puppets inside revive your spirits.

Playing with dolls is as old as mankind! So, this section of dolls display can never fail to impress anyone, young or old. The variety of dolls here is mind blowing, many almost like tiny real life individuals. Some of the exhibits are a few centuries old.

There is a section which allows practicing puppetry too. Manipulation by strings can be so captivating, I experienced that, here in this magical world of marionettes. Children really enjoyed this fabulous world of puppets in this unique museum.

Highlights of the Museum

  • See Papageno and Papagena from Mozart’s “Magic Flute”. It is a stage dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, giving an idea of how Mozart used to travel.
  • Another stage, which shows the fortress and farmers in the framework of the peasant riot in the year 1525.
  • See if you can recognize characters from Alice in Wonderland, Sound of Music and several other fables.

  • A fascinating place to visit, I've never tried playing with puppets on strings, but have used glove puppets. The marionettes are beautifully dressed.

  • Fascinating, Indrani! I love playing with puppets and used it at school to train the students to speak. Sitting behind a screen feels safer than to speak before an audience.

  • That's interesting. Yes, playing with dolls is universal.

  • Very interesting dolls!

  • Indrani, this is a wonderful post for Our World, tucked away in the cellar there is so much living history. Great pictures and that bishop would stop me in my tracks as well.

Odd that on our many visits to Salzburg we never discovered this treasure. Did you have Salzburger Knockerln in the Peters Keller, the oldest restaurant in Europe?

  • Amazing dolls – and a little scary too.

  • This is absolutely fabulous. The marionettes in your third photo are very lifelike.

  • Wonderful and really interesting captures .

  • What fun! I'm fascinated by Marionettes and the people who make them come alive. interesting museum!

  • That first face is a bit daunting! I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bishop haunted the place after all those years of being locked up. 🙂

  • I have always enjoyed watching marionettes. We have a puppeteer named Ronnie Burkett who performs with marionettes, though his shows are perhaps a bit raunchier than what you might see in this castle doll house!

  • Oh, I would love to pull the strings to see the marionettes move! Fun post, Indrani!

  • What a fascinating museum. I'd enjoy visiting that. I think you're right about the clouds reflected in my shot but a lot of the effect is caused by the wind and downpour which was churning up the water even if containers.

  • So interesting and with great details on that castle.
I have never played with dolls:-)

  • That's superb, playing with dolls.

  • not a doll house, but a doll castle? amazing.
