Interior of Carmelite Church, Gyor, Hungary

As we toured on foot through the old town of Gyor, we came across many old buildings and churches all well maintained and we observed parallelly many new constructions taking place too. The first on the graveled path for walking tour was Carmelite Church. It is also known by the name – Győri Kármelhegyi Boldogasszony Templom.

The Carmelite Church of Gyor, not very elaborately beautiful, yet dominated the city’s skyline. Its blazing mustard yellow baroque Italian exterior is very eye catching. With flawless appearance, this church is the pride of Gyor. The church was built between 1713 and 1725 by architect Márton Witwer.

The Carmelites settled down in Gyor in 1697. Their church was built by the plans of lay brother Athanasius Wittwer, between 1721 and 1725. (Lay brother is a person who has taken the vows of a religious order but is not ordained or obliged to take part in the full cycle of liturgy and is employed in ancillary or manual work.)

The monastery was completed in 1732. Main facade of the building resembles Italian architecture. Behind this is a domed nave of elliptical shape and a square sanctuary.

Here are some views of interiors; I hope you will like the virtual tour. Thankfully there weren’t many tourists and we could go around at our pace. You need max of 30 minutes to tour this church. Mario Altomonte painted the main altarpiece.
