I saw these green roses, a rare variety of roses in full bloom in the botanical gardens of Yercaud. Observe carefully and you will find the flower has no petals. It has only sepals, green in color, layer after layer. This gives the impression of it being a flower.

Green Rose is thought to be a descendant of Old Blush which is a two hundred year old form of Rosa Chinensis. China roses are extremely hardy, even in winters the Green Rose never loses its leaves. It remains vibrant green with a tinge of red. The bright green is a nice complement to other rose colours and is often used in floral arrangements.

Conditions for Growing Green Roses

  • Since there is no flower so no seed and therefore no next generation of green rose plant. This plant exists due to the kindness and love of gardeners who take cuttings and make more roses.
  • Green Rose is sun loving, flowering luxuriously in sunny areas.
  • It is fairly drought resistant. Plant in well drained soil and fertilize with an organic fertilizer in the spring.
  • Prune out dead canes and shape the plant to the height and width in fall.
