Faces of India – 257 Vegetable Seller near Bangalore Fort

Faces of India,

Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. Let me complete the #makeheritagefun event with this faces of India picture. This old vegetable seller was seated in his makeshift market place just outside the Bangalore Fort. While we were focusing on the fort, this man kept trying to attract our attention and make some sales. He wasn’t begging or pleading, it was clear sales pitch: Rs.10 for 2 raw bananas. None of us wanted to make any purchase then but he did catch my attention.

I knelt down to talk to him. After hearing me he said, “I don’t understand Hindi”.
So I switched to speaking in Tamil. I asked him about his life there and whether he makes enough for his family.
He said he has been around this place for more than 60 years.
He is all alone and doesn’t depend on anybody.
He makes his living by selling vegetables and that is enough for him.

He then asked me some questions: How come you are speaking in so many languages? How did you learn them?
