Faces of India – 247 Flower Vendor on Highway

You have been meeting several tender coconut water sellers in my faces of India series; today I introduce a flower seller to you. Meet Jayamma, the flower vendor whom I met while driving along highway NH206.

In fact you will meet several such Jayammas along various NHs trying to make a small business from the speeding travelers and drivers along the road. Some sell flowers, some their local produce, and if you are driving very early in the morning you will find newspaper sellers too. I usually stop to quench my thirst but this time these strings of kanakamabarams (Crossandra infundibuliformis, firecracker flower) stopped me on my tracks.

She has been selling flowers for past couple of years now, but this is the first time she has been photographed she said. Almost always she has been able sell all her flowers she said happily. And I thought what a cheerful face to meet early morning.

Faces of India

a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011.
