Faces of India 293

I met her at an arecanut processing home/factory. She had such a huge pile to cut open and get the nuts out. And all she had was a hand held cutter. Her fingers were wrapped in rubber sheets, not gloves. That is all the basic protection she had for dehusking those nuts. Though arecanut dehusking machine is out in the market she doesn’t own one yet. It would take her the whole day she said. At the end of the day she would get paid ‘per kg’ basis.

Noticing her deep red lips I asked her how many nuts she has per day. She replied she just chews a few pieces. I cautioned her “those nuts aren’t too good for health”. And to that she just smiled.

  • My grandparents are from India and this reminded me of the :). I love the pic that you have taken. It reminds me of how happy she is with the little. Such a strong, brave lady

  • As usual, nice portrait here and a little backgrounder. From your photos, I have seen how hardworking people of India can be. And how dedicated they can be in their work. Looking forward to more faces of India 🙂

  • I didn’t know it was called dehusking nuts. She is such a strong woman! I love how you’ve captured her face in the top photo. Very inspiring. Ree Love30

  • Though a tough job, braking nuts one by one, but she seems to be happy with her life.

  • Lovely pictures 🙂 From my childhood days, I have been seeing many people who were dehusking the areca nuts with bare hands… It is good that recently they have started taking protective measures.

    TC, keep smiling 🙂

  • She sounds so ambitious and simple minded
    I love that 🙂
