Faces of India – 283 Veeragaase Dancer with Full Costume

Another participant, a Veeragaase dancer of Veerabhadra Dance Group, You can see his leader at Faces of India – 264. I still remember how the artists of that group startled me. The Veeragaase dancer costume and facial make up surely made some interesting topics for photography. While I had just the portrait of the leader, I decided to go in for some more details of his costume. See the arm bands! The entire costume set must weigh a few kgs I thought.

Veeragaase dance form is a popular dance form of Karnataka. The dance is performed on stories from Hindu mythology. Later in the evening I got to see their intense, bordering on ferocious, dance movements.

Interestingly Veeragase is to be performed only by the Jangama, clan of Lingayat community. The performers of Veeragase are also called Lingadevaru. If you are keen to see one of the live performances plan your visit during Dasara Festival to Mysore.

Faces of India,

Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011.
