He is the guide, the caretaker, an employee of ASI, in charge of opening and closing the temple as per the visiting hours. He seemed a very knowledgeable person to me. He introduced himself as Yogesh, with a torch in hand he guided us through the interiors of Lakshmi Devi Temple of Doddagaddavalli. It was pitch dark inside, thanks to his torch we could watch our footsteps inside. Yogesh highlighted the important sculpted images on the ceilings of the temple. We were told by him that if we whisper our wishes into the ears of Nandi, the bull, our wishes would be fulfilled. The Bhoota and Preta figures too were highlighted; they are the dwarpalakas (gatekeepers) of Goddess Kali’s shrine. In the end of the tour he doesn’t demand anything as fees and is happy with whatever you give him.
