Faces of India – 264 Veerabhadra Dance Troupe Leader

Faces of India,

Faces of India is a series through which I intend to portray the various characters of my country whom I met during my travels. I bring back souvenirs, frozen moments from my travels, why not some memories of people I have met and interacted during the travels. Faces of India is a weekly series in my blog since MARCH 2011. I entered the restaurant La Uppa of Grand Mercure Hotel in Mysuru to find a group of these artists sitting around a table in their costumes. I was immobile for a second wondering if I was at the right place. There were 8 of them each looking fiercer than the other.

Look at his crown, it is bigger than his face, I wondered how heavy it would be! Was it easy to carry on head and dance too! My eyes scanned them in disbelief and then I saw a couple of them smiling at the fear written on my face. That eased me a bit.

Kiralu Mahesh (he seemed to be Veerabhadra Dance Troupe Leader) gave me his visiting card maintaining that same cold gaze. So they belonged to the famed Veeragaase dance troupe. They assembled there to perform for Chief Minister when he would arrive at the hotel for inauguration. No smiles were exchanged, when I sought his permission for a picture he put on an even sterner look!
