Durga Pujo Pandal Hopping Bangalore, a Photo Essay

Ask any Bengali and they will tell you the best way to experience Durga Pujo is pandal hopping. Pandals are display centers where Bengalees of a locality get together and worship Goddess Durga. The belief is Ma Durga has descended on earth to kill the demon Mahishasur.

Bangalore Pujo can in no way match the scale with which this festival is celebrated in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. Yet it is estimated that there are 50+ pujo pandals in Bangalore. I am on a Durga Pujo pandal hopping spree now. And here are the first 6 pujo pandals I visited yesterday (shoshti) night.

A very small puja but very beautifully made Goddess. This is the only pandal I saw where Ma Durga has her son Ganesha in her lap and Kartik seated just beside her. Her 2 daughters are standing on either side. This year they had very unique decoration with plates, spoons and cups.

Sarathi Cultural Association

Sarathi Cultural Association has white sholapith based theme for decoration. Sholapith is naturally white and this adds a different charm. It is the Indian cork, a milky-white sponge-wood. Its texture is similar to thermocol, but comparatively far better. Being environment friendly, it dissolves almost immediately when immersed in water.

The idols are made of hay and clay. Interesting point to note here is that this clay is specially brought in from the banks of the Ganga. This is one of the environment friendly pandal I saw yesterday.

Location of Sarathi Cultural Association

Sarathi Cultural Association is on Ganapathi Temple Road, Koramangala.

This pandal has a very simple setup. This is one among very old puja pandals of Bangalore. However since it is within Air Force residential complex not many visit it. The crowns of each idol is so well made.
