Tracing the Rich History of Castelgrande Bellinzona

This city is believed to have been inhabited since the neolithic times. Today it is famous for three grand medieval castles which are in reasonably good state.

Dating back to at least the 4th century Castelgrande Bellinzona has witnessed centuries of events that have shaped the region. Over the years, it has seen the rise and fall of empires, the clashes of warring factions, and the comings and goings of noble rulers.

During the Middle Ages, Castelgrande played a pivotal role in the power struggles of the region. It served as the residence of the dukes of Milan, the Swiss Confederation, and various other noble families. The castle’s towering walls and fortified towers were formidable defenses against invasions, with countless battles fought and sieges endured.

Probably the most notable of all historical events in Castelgrande’s history was the 15th century conflict, named – the Three Castles Wars. The Castelgrande castle, along with its neighboring fortresses, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, formed a defensive triangle that endured sieges and changed hands multiple times.

By the turn of 19th century the threat of wars diminished. Sadly, by then Castelgrande lost its military significance and gradually fell into disrepair. Things took a positive turn in the 20th century when the castle underwent extensive restoration efforts thus bringing it back to its former glory. This enabled it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Castelgrande’s architecture is a testament to both beauty and functionality. Its robust stone wall plans, meticulously designed and fortified, proved to be impregnable defense against invading forces throughout the ages. The strategic positioning of the fortress, overlooking the surrounding valleys and commanding a vantage point over vital trade routes, made it a key stronghold for controlling the region.

Located at the crossroads of the Alpine passes, it served as a crucial point of control and defense, allowing rulers to assert their authority over the surrounding territories. From medieval conflicts to territorial disputes, the fortress witnessed countless battles and sieges, shaping the course of history in the region.

From its early origins as a Roman fortification, it grew in scale and complexity, incorporating features such as battlements, ramparts, and watchtowers. Walking through courtyards, halls, and living quarters of Castelgrande, I could well imagine the grandeur it once possessed. Tips for visiting Castles of Bellinzona

Thanks to the signboards getting to the castle is easy. The three main castles, namely Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro, are located close to each other, making it convenient to visit all of them in one trip. Each castle has its own entrance, and there is an admission fee to access the interior and exhibitions.

Be prepared for some uphill walking or stair climbing. Worth the effort, as you are rewarded with panoramic views and an immersive historical experience.

We spent much of the time viewing the scenic sights around. Parts of the other two castles were visible from here. We walked along the castle wall, the lush green pathway was a very pleasing sight.

Underneath this pathway is a dark tunnel. We did take a peek inside the dark tunnel, not very tempting enough to take the long walk through it.

After this very satisfying and refreshing halt, we continued our journey to Lucerne.
