West Bengal government has named it Vivekananda Setu. (Setu means bridge in Bengali language.) Vivekananda Setu, also called Willingdon Bridge. It links the city of Howrah, at Bally, to its twin city of Kolkata, at Dakshineswar. So it has the third name – Bally Bridge.

Vivekananda Setu is a wonderful place to stand and watch the life on Hooghly River. Howrah Bridge may be more popular but Bally Bridge too is no less in terms of its shiny steel look.

  • 1. First rail cum road bridge that connected Kolkata to Howrah.
  • 2. It took 6 years to construct the bridge, from 1936 to 1942.
  • 3. You will find the name Rai Bahadur Jagmal Raja stamped on each girder of the bridge. An industrialist of 1930s, it was his company constructed the bridge.
  • 4. Total length of the bridge is 823m.

  • 5. It is one of the 5 longest bridges over Hooghly River.
  • 6. Vidyasagar Setu is the longest cable–stayed bridge in Asia.
  • 7. It cost ₹3.88 billion to build Vivekananda Setu.
  • 8. Approximately 22,600litres of paint is required to paint this mammoth bridge.
  • 9. The bridge is given 3 coats of paint. The first coat is of zinc chromate primer (1,400 liters) the second coat is of zinc chromate primer red oxide (1200litres). And the final coat will be of 20,000-litre aluminium paint.
  • 10. Vivekananda Setu has become weak due to ageing and heavy traffic. A second bridge, Nivedita Setu, has come up parallel to this.
